Phyllis grew up in a fashion retailing and manufacturing family. It was only natural that she continue the tradition and major in fashion merchandising. Her father was a Vice President in 3 companies that were fashion leaders throughout three decades. She often accompanied him to magazine press openings, fashion shows and manufacturer’s showrooms.Dinner conversation at home consisted of the latest color trends and models of the moment. She credits classic movies from 30’s, 40’s and 50’s filmed in Technicolor for her emphasis on color, the SIGNATURE of her line. After finishing school Phyllis started as a buyer’s clerical at a moderate price chain of 800 stores, moving to assistant buyer of contemporary sportswear in a high end buying office, then finally a buyer. While continuing to raise her daughter Morgan in Manhattan Phyllis shifted her focus to becoming a fashion stylist for television, an image consultant for the music industry and an advisor to the Avon Corporation. To deepen her knowledge of fashion history Phyllis simultaneously apprenticed in the costume history department of the Museum of the City of New York (MCNY). Several years of helping to mount key fashion retrospectives at MCNY, The Cooper Hewitt Museum and the Brooklyn Museum eventually provided enough background to be hired at the New York Historical Society and again at MCNY. She also utilized her styling skills for HALSTON, Phaidon Press Ltd, 2001. While traveling throughout Italy she was introduced to the classic Capri Sandal.This inspired her to do a collection of jeweled luxury sandals to be made in New York that drew upon all phases of her training and to bring the shoe industry back to New York. Her collection was originally intended to service only friends, family and acquaintances. The popularity of the sandal collection quickly became a wholesale business, encompassing children’s luxury sandals, luxury canine accessories, totes and belts.
The Phyllis Morgan Collection Ltd. is now the parent company to the Phyllis Morgan Collection, Lucky Jewels canine accessories and Phyllis Morgan kids.
